OUR FOCUS
Non-Toxic
Have you ever gone into a building that has just had new carpet installed? That new carpet smell can overwelm your senses. Beware! What you are smelling is the off gasing of harmful chemicals. VOC's( Volatile Organic Compounds) and formaldehyde found in carpet and its adhesives are known to cause chronic and acute health problems. A safe alternative would be to use a carpet made from natural fibers and a water based, no-VOC adhesive. These safe alternatives are part of Non-Toxic design.
The concept of Non-Toxic design may have started as a movement against sick building syndrome in the 1980's. See the EPA's explanation of Sick Building Syndrome here. Exposure to inadequate and unclean ventilation, the off gasing of materials being installed as well as biological contaminates were leaving people sick.
The carpet example listed here is just one example of a toxic product we put in our homes and businesses. Others include paint, finishes, upholstery, manufactured wood products, adhesives and cleaning products. Ventilation can be toxic if not installed or maintained properly. Recirculating or bringing in polluted air in interior spaces and in the case of ventilation systems, not being cleaned, is toxic.
If a building has not be properly sealed or ventilated in any part of the building process, biological contaminates such as mold and bacteria can occur. These contaminates can make peopole sick with coughs, fevers, muscle aches and allergies to name a few.
Non-Toxic design should be implemented, especially for people with chemical sensitivies, allergies, immuno-compromised functions as well as children. Hire us to make your space health and non-toxic.
