Green

Green design is the integration of energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials and the well being of the space’s inhabitants and Earth. Green design will be the standard by which we build and remodel in the future.

Energy efficiency incompasses the conservation of our natural resources. Energy efficient systems need to be planned into the overall design. For instance, a tankless water heater, which is far more efficiently run than a typical water heater, will take up less space. The space saved from this application then gets to be designed into the habitable space. The installation of a solar tube in a dark hallway or room can light a 200 square foot space without using any electricity. Lighting, with the incorporation of natural daylight and low energy use light fixtures and bulbs will greatly reduce energy consumption and the unwanted heating of a space.

Sustainable Materials will either be considered reused, renewable, recycled and/ or made from a local manufacturer. In choosing and designing with a sustainable materials, the life cycle of that material needs to be considered. What is the production impact? Is there environmental destruction or overuse of a natural resource involved? Is it created from a renewable resource? How far does it need to be transported to reach its final destination? Is it hazardous to install? What is the life span of the material? In its end use, does it go to a landfill or a recycling plant?
